Jory's cabin-shelf list

Eight free worlds for the evenings
when the boat is moored below the lock

Once the gates are shut for the night and the stove is lit, Jory reaches for a second list: eight free browser games that carry on quietly while the canal sleeps. Two hand you a football club, two are about trade and making things, two are wars fought from a map, one is a garden and one sends a hero out to the quest board.

Virtonomics

Economic simulation · Business & tycoon

The canals were dug to carry coal, cloth and grain between mills and towns, so a game about supply chains sits naturally on Jory's shelf. You run factories, mines, farms and shops, wire them into chains of suppliers and customers, and wait for the single daily server update that settles every player's choices at once. Careful planning beats quick clicking here.

Hattrick key artSport & management

Hattrick

Football manager

One of the longest-running football management games around. A weekly training focus lifts one chosen skill across your whole squad, players are bought in a market every manager shares, and you set tactics and individual orders before kick-off, then follow it all in the match viewer.

  • Ten minutes before kick-off
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available

Good for: Managers who like depth and a real transfer market.

Your first session
  1. Choose a training focus and give it time.
  2. Read your squad before bidding on anyone.
  3. Set individual orders for key players.

Sokker key artSport & management

Sokker

Football manager

A football manager built around bringing players up through a youth academy. Matches are shown in full 3D, tactics come from their own editor, and money goes into improving the ground, and a twice-weekly league calendar sits alongside international fixtures.

  • Short visits around match days
  • Desktop browser

Molehill Empire 2 key artFarm, town & zoo

Molehill Empire 2

Gardening sim

A plot of beds to sow, water and harvest on time, then fill the orders that arrive. New crops and garden decorations open up as you go, and trading produce with other gardeners turns a neat patch into a sprawling one, rather like the allotments along the towpath.

  • A few minutes between other jobs
  • Desktop browser; mobile app also available

Good for: Players who enjoy short, regular tending sessions.

Your first session
  1. Sow crops that ripen before your next visit.

Prosperous Universe key artSpace & sci-fi

Prosperous Universe

Interplanetary trading sim

A space trading game where nothing exists until a real player produces it. You run production chains, ship cargo between worlds, take on contracts and trade on a commodity exchange whose prices are set by the players themselves. It is a working cargo route on a much larger map.

  • Short check-ins or long planning evenings
  • Desktop browser
Jory’s view from the tiller: who it suits, how to cast off

Good for: Anyone curious about an economy run wholly by players.

Your first session
  1. Learn one production chain properly.
  2. Take small contracts while you learn.
  3. Watch the exchange before you sell.

Battle Pirates key artStrategy & war

Battle Pirates

Naval warfare

Jory likes a boat, though these are rather larger than a narrowboat. You fit warship hulls with weapons, armour and components of your choice, send fleets across an ocean map to raid rival bases, and keep your own floating base defended with turrets and repair docks.

  • A quick raid or an evening in dry dock
  • Desktop browser

Good for: Tinkerers who love fitting out a hull.

Your first session
  1. Build the repair docks early.
  2. Master one hull before trying others.
  3. Scout a base before you attack it.

Cost for the eight: nothing to play, with optional in-game purchases in each.

01

Free from the first mooring

Not one of the eight has a joining fee, and every one will take you a long way without a payment: clubs, gardens, companies and fleets all arrive complete.

Each studio keeps an optional store of extras and time-savers. Lots of veteran players never set foot in it, and a few of the eight let you cap spending in the settings, handy on a computer the whole family shares.

02

Casting off on your first evening

A game's button opens the studio's official website in a fresh tab, where a quick free registration comes first, usually just an email address and a password.

Most start with a guided tutorial; see it through to the end, since it is the quickest tour of the screens and of how each game earns and spends.

03

Short look-ins and long evenings

Almost all of them keep running while the tab is closed: crops ripen, quests finish, matches are played and the daily update settles the markets. A glance over breakfast and another after supper keeps things moving.

Spend the quick visits harvesting, collecting and queueing the next job. Keep the long evenings for weighty choices like opening a new production chain, refitting a fleet or rethinking tactics.

04

Keeping your windlass safe

Treat each login like the windlass for one lock only: type it solely into the web address of the studio behind that game. Every game deserves its own unrepeated password, and two-step sign-in is worth switching on wherever a studio has it.

Genuine studio staff have no reason to want your password. A stranger promising premium currency for your login wants the account itself, so report them and move on.

How these eight won a berth in Jory's cabin

  • Each opens straight into a browser tab on a desktop or laptop; there is nothing to install on the first night.
  • Not one asks a joining fee, and a whole season of play need not cost a penny.
  • Most carry on growing while you are away, so even a brief look in moves your club, garden or company along.
  • Long-established studios run all of them, so the player communities are lively and the updates keep coming.

No. Every game on the shelf runs in a desktop browser, and three of them have a studio phone app on the side.

No. Registering and playing are free on every one, and in-game shopping stays entirely up to you.

No. Independent studios own every one of them; Jory only points the way, and each button opens the studio's site.

No. Eight games come from eight different studios, and every one asks for its own free registration.

Hattrick, Molehill Empire 2 and Virtonomics have official apps alongside the browser version. Sokker, Prosperous Universe, Battle Pirates, Game of Thrones: Winter is Coming and Tanoth are built for the browser and play best on a desktop or laptop.

Molehill Empire 2 or Tanoth: two minutes will water the beds or pick the next quest. Prosperous Universe and Virtonomics reward a longer planning evening.

In all of them to some degree. The two football games share markets and leagues, Battle Pirates and Winter is Coming pit you against rival players and alliances, Tanoth has duels and guilds, and the two economy games run on markets made by players.
